How Chapters Work
A practical guide to running a student-led mental health awareness chapter at your school.

Form Your Core Team
Start by gathering a small group of passionate students who care about mental health awareness. You'll need 3-5 founding members and a faculty advisor to guide and support your chapter.
Your faculty advisor: This can be a teacher, counselor, or administrator who believes in your mission and can help navigate school policies.

Get School Approval
Work with your faculty advisor to present your chapter idea to school administration. Explain your mission, planned activities, and how the chapter will benefit students. Most schools are eager to support mental health initiatives.
Helpful tip: Emphasize that your chapter focuses on awareness and education, not therapy or counseling.

Plan Regular Meetings
Schedule consistent meetings — weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly — depending on what works for your school. Use this time to plan activities, share ideas, discuss mental health topics, and support one another.
Meeting structure: Start with check-ins, discuss upcoming events, brainstorm new ideas, and end with encouragement and connection.
Launch Activities and Campaigns
Start creating visibility on campus through activities like Mental Health Awareness Week, peer-led discussions, positive message campaigns, resource distribution, guest speakers, art installations, and social media outreach.
Start small: You don't need to do everything at once. Begin with one or two manageable activities and grow from there.
Spread the Word
Recruit new members through announcements, posters, social media, and word of mouth. Make your chapter visible and welcoming. The more students involved, the greater your impact.
Inclusive messaging: Remind everyone that the chapter is open to all students — not just those facing mental health challenges.
